Be a Tourist in Your Hometown

It doesn’t matter if you’re new in town or you’ve lived there your whole life, there is something where you live that you haven’t done. 100% guarantee. In my tiny hometown, it took me until I was 32 to do one of the top-rated tourist things. Viewing your hometown as a tourist gives you new perspective – it makes things that might normally feel mundane look shiny and exciting!

Google “things to do in (your city).” Search it on Atlas Obscura. You're bound to find something you’ve never heard of, or always meant to do but never got to it. Now’s the time! Try a new restaurant, look at it from a new mode of transportation, or go to the big tourist trap you’ve avoided because “you’re a local”. It might just give you a new appreciation of the place you live!

This is an especially great practice if you’ve lived in the same place forever, or if you’re feeling stuck where you live. I cannot overstate the joy of finding new things in a place you thought you knew like the back of your hand. If you’re really stuck, think outside the box – cemeteries, parks, churches, maybe even a funky gas station!

What are your favorite things to do in your hometown? What makes you feel like a tourist, in a good way – like you’re seeing something new? Let us know!
