How to Celebrate Earth Day

Did you know that April 22nd, 1970 was the very first Earth Day? This was before the government had any environmental protections, so Senator Gaylord Nelson established the day as a way to force the issue on the national agenda. So, one person can make a difference! Here are some of my favorite ways to celebrate Earth Day:

  • Hug a tree! My whole life, I’ve loved wrapping my arms around a tree. It’s an easy activity that you can do with a whole lot of mindfulness! Feel how bumpy or smooth the bark is – are there bugs, now that you’re up close? Does it smell like anything? Is it sticky, warm, or pokey? Getting up close and personal is my favorite way to show my love for the Earth.

  • Organize a clean-up of someplace you care about. Maybe organize sounds too fancy. Call up some friends and tell them to meet you at a favorite park or stretch of road, and hand out trash bags. If you feel like going all out, offer a prize to whomever can collect the most pieces of trash. It might make you think twice next time your straw wrapper doesn’t quite make it into the can.

  • Did you know the 2022 theme for Earth Day is “Invest in Our Planet”? The official Earth Day website www.earthday.org states that “we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably)” – something we can all consider, no matter our age! Brainstorm ways your family can invest in the planet so that your children’s children’s children have a wonderful place to live.

  • Spend time in nature, with no distractions. Take a swim, hike, or nap somewhere with no cell phone reception. I promise, it’ll be great!
